Fighting between Russia and Ukraine intensified sharply after a brief three-day ceasefire expired, with both sides launching renewed attacks that have pushed the combined death toll to at least 27, according to official and media reports.

Ukraine’s emergency services said that a large-scale Russian missile and drone strike targeted multiple locations across the country, resulting in at least 24 deaths and several injuries. Authorities reported that air raid sirens sounded repeatedly in the capital Kyiv as residents took shelter during the overnight assaults. Emergency responders described widespread damage to civilian infrastructure as rescue operations continued in affected areas.

In a separate development, Russian officials reported that a Ukrainian drone strike hit the city of Ryazan, killing three people and injuring 12 others. The attack marks one of the latest retaliatory strikes as both countries continue to exchange fire following the end of the temporary pause in hostilities.

The escalation comes just days after a short ceasefire, reportedly announced by US President Donald Trump, aimed at temporarily halting fighting between the two sides. However, the truce collapsed quickly, with both Moscow and Kyiv accusing each other of violations and continuing military operations soon after its expiration.

Ukrainian authorities condemned the renewed Russian assault, calling it a deliberate targeting of civilian areas, while Russian officials maintained that their strikes were aimed at military-related infrastructure. Independent verification of battlefield claims from either side remains difficult due to the ongoing conflict.

The latest wave of violence underscores the fragile nature of ceasefire attempts in the nearly three-year-long war, which has repeatedly seen brief pauses in fighting followed by rapid escalation. International observers have expressed concern over the humanitarian impact of renewed strikes, warning that civilians continue to bear the heaviest burden of the conflict.

Diplomatic efforts to restore a longer-term truce remain stalled, with both sides holding firm on their respective positions amid ongoing international pressure for negotiations.
